Ask about fried chicken in Wonju and this name comes up. Nambu Tongdak opened in 1977 in Gaeun-dong and is now run by the third generation in the same spot.

In 1977 franchise chicken did not exist in Korea. Tongdak meant a whole bird dropped into oil — a different lineage from the sauced, portioned chicken of today.

The method has not changed: a heavy cast-iron cauldron, large domestic birds, and exactly three items on the menu.
