AI systems that don't just answer a single question, but plan multiple steps and take actions — calling tools, browsing, writing and running code — to complete a goal.
A standard chatbot answers one prompt at a time. An agent is given a broader goal — “book this trip” or “fix this failing test” — and decides on its own what sequence of tool calls, searches, or code executions will get there, checking its own results along the way and adjusting course.
Agentic AI is a major focus of 2026 product roadmaps because it turns AI from a research assistant into something that can complete real work end-to-end — but it also raises the stakes when the model hallucinates or misjudges a step, since it's now taking actions, not just suggesting text.
